Our History

Black Mountain Gallery opened its doors in Chapel Hill, North Carolina over thirty years ago. Since 1974, Terri & David Lange, their daughter and four sons have developed a style of handwrought jewelry that is touted as a North Carolina treasure. Now managed by their son, Adam, and his wife, Sandy, Terri and David's original line of sterling silver & 14 karat gold jewelry has blossomed to more than 2000 designs, with more creations added yearly.

David & Terri brought their children to live in the Tar Heel State in the early 7o's. Shortly thereafter when it came time to name their newly establish jewelry enterprise, David was struck by the evocative name of a local landmark, Blackwood Mountain. Reasoning that Blackwood Mountain Silver Company seemed a bit cumbersome, they decided to drop the "wood" and arrived at Black Mountain Silver Company. In fact, our logo is derived from a photo of the moon rising over Blackwood Mountain as printed in The Chapel Hill News, in 1974.

Our First Catalog 1970's

The original shop opened in November of 1974 at 504 West Franklin Street. In 1980 they moved to a more prominent location in historic Carr Mill Mall. By 1985, in addition to its growing catalog of designs, the business added the jewelry of as many as 50 artists from around the United States to its showroom. This change required a second move to a larger 2000 square foot storefront in Eastgate Shopping Center and instituted the name change to Black Mountain Gallery. In the 1990's the number of Black Mountain designs had exceeded 2000 designs and with no more room, Black Mountain stopped carrying guest artists, but the name remained. 2003 saw the latest move to our jewel box of a gallery in Meadowmont Village.

Our Gallery Showroom 2003

To compliment our physical storefront in Meadowmont, we opened our virtual showroom in 2005 with the launch of TheBlackMountainGallery.com. We have people coming through our door daily telling us how they saw someone, or were themselves seen, wearing our jewelry at the Chapel Hill High School football game; in Georgia at church, or even shopping in the crowded streets of Hong Kong (really). We have created countless articles of jewelry and trained scores of jewelers over the past decades. Many have tried to imitate our style, quality, price and customer service; now that our websites is at your disposal, you can be the true judge of who makes the best handwrought designer sterling silver and 14k gold jewelry, not just in North Carolina, but now in your neighborhood too! We're glad you found us and we hope you'll be here to enjoy the next many decades with us at www.TheBlackMountainGallery.com!
